2018 races

I thought you might like to know a little more about the Club Champs for next year so that you can plan your calendars accordingly. Also, a few of the races already have pre-entry open….

The Champs format will be much the same next year as this. 5 races from Fell to qualify for the Fell champs. 5 races from Road to qualify for Road champs. 7 races to qualify for Overall champs. At LEAST 2 need to be from the “other” side. ie. 5 fell, 2 road, or 2 fell, 5 road.

Note there are quite a few pre-entry only’s, and there is now a Junior Champs as well. I’m unsure of the format yet, but Steve will tell us all about it when he has a spare moment – but I have noted the races below to prepare you….

Fell Champs –

Feb 18th – PRE ENTRY ONLY New Chew Short Course. a 3.5 hour limit Orienteering event from Chew Reservoir. They’re pretty strict on Kit, so make sure you read the list and take everything. Race site – entries not open yet (as of 29/10/17). Keep checking though as it does sell out.

24th April – PRE ENTRY ONLY Teenager with Altitude AL 15 miles, 7600ft ascent. AL from Stair in the Lake District. Only 75 entries, so get yours in quick. Race Site. (Entries are not open yet – as of 29/10/17).  – (you’ll need to pay for parking as well- its about a fiver for a car if memory serves)/

5th May – PRE-ENTRY ONLY Cake Race £5 only 250 runners. Race Site. 10 mile race around saddleworth moors. Bring a cake to be entered into the Cake Competition and get your race fee back.

20th May??? – Lantern Pike Dash AS- Entry on day. £4? maybe? 1.2 miles. Ridiculous amounts of up and down. Be prepared for a short race. £4? maybe? Note (at the moment, as far as we know) this clashes with the Liverpool Rock’n’Roll marathon in the Road champs.

10th June – Passing Clouds– BM  Entry on Day – £6 (+car parking) 9.8miles. Based at Tittersworth, Congleton, I can only imagine this goes up and round Hen Cloud near the Roaches. Race site.

14th July – Thurlstone Chase – BS  Entry on Day. 4 miles 600ft, put on my Penistone Fell runners. Looks to be a fast and furious one. Race site.

29th July- James’s Thorn– Entry on day. You know it. Des race that goes up and down James’s thorn. Probably about a fiver.

13th October – PRE ENTRY ONLY – Lakes in a Day Ultra – Linear 50 mile (4000ft) route from Caldbeck to Cartmel. Entries are open from 6/11/17. Race website (which has a lovely animation of the route.

5th (or 18th) November- Peak Raid. 3 hour Orienteering event. I’d imagine it’ll be £11 pre-entry, £19 on the day. At the time of writing we still have one of these to go this year, so go and do that and you’ll have a good idea of whats going to happen next year. Race site.

11th November – Roaches BL – £6 Entry on the day. 15 miles, 3700ft. At time of writing, this is still enterable for 2017 as well. Go ad have a butchers at it this time around. Down at Tittesworth, you’ll have to pay for parking as well. Race Site.

Road

It’s worth saying at this point, if you’re going to enter a road race, or XC as a Glossopdale Harrier you NEED to be affiliated with UKA. When you re-do your membership for 2018, make sure that Alison knows you need to be affiliated and she’ll get you a UKA number. (this is the case even if you want to enter a single race).

Jan – 1 mile Challenge

4th March- Trafford 10k. Entries already open. £16 for affiliated members.

April – Millbrook Monster 10k, A multi-terrain 10k around Hyde. Take from that what you will. Road. Mud. Water. Trail. Everything they can throw at you. Site is here. But they aren’t taking entries for 2018 yet.

April – Stride through the Woods 5k, trail 5k around the delightful area of Hyde. It was in the Club champs 2 years ago, and this year it is accompanying the Juniors event which is in our other champs as well (see below). Site is here.

20th May- Liverpool Rock’n’Roll Marathon. Entries are open. Currently £39 (prices are apparently liable to go up at any time with no notice. It’s a marathon, with a load of loud stuff. A great opportunity to get a decent marathon in if you didn’t get into the flat boring one down south.

3rd June- Race the Train (Bury). 11 miles.Entries are open. £22 at time of writing. Point to point race from Bury to Rawtenstall, racing against an actual train. What more could you possibly ask for? I think you have to pay for a ticket if you want a lift back to where your car is. Then again, I suppose you could always run back. Race website.

5th August – Dovedale dipper – Unsure if it is the 26 or 15 miler at the mo. Steve will confirm at some point. Entries not yet open.

September – Macc half – its a half marathon. In Macclesfield. Here is the race site. Looks to be £21 for affiliated runners, but £4 extra if you enter on the day.

November- White Rose Ultra 30. You can STILL enter the 2017 version if you want! – its next weekend (4th November) and is £55. If you go and volunteer to marshal this year you get money off your race entry next year. It’s only 30 miles, gets you UTMB points and it ain’t far away. Race Site.

November – XC – I promise that next years XC meet for the club will be in November. I can’t give you a date yet. I will try to make sure it is in the league which enables you to enter only one race rather than the whole series.

December – Anytime Glossop Park run

Junior races

April – Stride through the woods – 1.7k for 9- 12 year olds and the full 5k for 13 and over. A run through the woods at Hyde. There is a bit of a downhill start… which means there is an uphill finish….always good fun.

May – Lantern Pike. Starting and finishing in the same place as the adults race, this race goes across the stream at the bottom of the hill and does a circuit round the farm on the hill. Keep some energy for that last run up into the finish field!

July – Charlesworth and Chisworth – part of the carnival. Don’t run this one in fancy dress. There are 3 different races for different age categories – I don’t have the date for it yet – but the site for last year is here.

October-  Shine a light – Head torcher race. I think it’s 2 miles? A great twist on a fast distance. Based from Hargate hill.

November XC – yes, you love the mud and the cold and the running around in circles. This will be one of the November meetings.

Anytime fastest Junior parkrun (Marple)

As yet undated….

Hadfield Dash – I have NO idea about this race, except that it’s in Hadfield.

Plumfayre – From Hadfield, follow the main race route up through the village and across the fields towards Windy Harbour and back.

So there you go.

All questions to me. I shall ignore them and then you can ask Steve instead.
